Marcelino: "A win against Betis would mean a determined attack on fourth place"
Before Sunday's LaLiga game at the Benito Villamarín, Valencia CF coach Marcelino spoke to the media in his pre-match press conference:
18 points remaining
"It's very difficult for us to take all 18 remaining points, because we've got very tough games coming up. We're in the final stage of the season and every side is playing for something important. If we were to take all 18 points, we would have a high chance -if not definitive- of getting into the Champions League.
"We have to go game by game. However many points we get, our idea is to pick up 3 tomorrow against very tough opposition, who are also playing for a chance to get into Europe. For us, a win would mean putting 9 points between us and taking a big step towards European qualification, as well as closing in on the Champions League with Getafe and Sevilla playing one another."
Another meeting with Betis
"I think that we've played each other five times in two seasons, and we're yet to lose. I don't think we've done a bad job against them. In my humble opinion, I think that all of the games have been similar, in terms of how they've played out. Being able to kill these games off is another matter.
"We know that they are a side who use possession as one of their fundamental weapons. We will try to match them for possession as much as possible, although we know that the logical thing would be for them to win that facet, having been one of the sides that has had the most possession all season."
Playing at the venue for the Copa del Rey final
"Now we're playing Betis at a ground where we have played this season in the Copa del Rey, but it's a different competition. Now we know that whoever wins will get 3 very important points. We know that for Betis a win would bring them closer to us in the table, and get into the fight for Europe. For us, winning would mean a determined attack on fourth place. It's a difficult, attractive, exciting and important game. Not decisive, but important."
Rodrigo or Guedes in the attack
"We haven't decided whether Guedes will play upfront or on the wing, and we also haven't decided if Rodrigo will play upfront. We could play both of them, with neither being used as forwards or just one. We shall see. After training we have to analyse how things went today, and some players are carrying niggles -as is normal at this stage of the season, with the amount of games and training sessions we've had."
Kang In playing for Korean Republic
"The club and the Korean national team made an agreement because he wasn't getting many minutes and we all thought that the best thing for his progression would be for him to play in the Under-20s World Cup. If we need him because there are injuries to players in his position, then we can recall him. We all believe that this was the best situation for him."
